These notes are being written after the annual class officers meetings in Hanover on May 4-5, where Craig and EleanorHaines and your secretary represented 1928.Red and Chili Edgar and Jack and PearlPhelan were also in town to see their sons. A meeting Friday night and another Saturday morning kept us busy. At the Treasurers Association meeting Craig gave a report of the recent Alumni Council meeting. Saturday afternoon we watched the freshman and varsity track meets, and that evening after the banquet Craig, Eleanor, Scott Skinner '65 and I drove over to Nortvich for a fine visit with Herb and Mimi Sensenig.
The Haines have just recently announced the engagement of both of their daughters. Carol, University of Colorado '54, is engaged to John P. Salsgiver, Harvard '52 and University of Virginia Business School '54, who is employed by DuMont in Clifton, N. J. Linda is engaged to Richard E. Cole of East Haven, Conn. She graduated from the Northfield School and is a junior at Simmons College; her fiance graduated last year from Keene Teachers College.
We missed President George Pasfield and Suzanne in Hanover. George's doctor would not let him make the trip from Philadelphia because he was leaving in a few days for Bermuda. A month there will get George in good shape for reunion.
Hank Embree '30 told us that on his recent trip to Bangkok he and his wife met TaxConnell's wife. She was staying there because she was not allowed to accompany Tax on a trip to Indonesia due to "the trouble" there. Tax is assistant director of the China Medical Board and travels extensively in the Far East interviewing applicants for scholarships in American medical schools.
Jack and Peg Zellers of Southport, Conn., spent two weeks in March in the Virgin Islands -one on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix. Their other principal recreation has been their grandson who is now three. Their daughter Sally and her husband, Lee Wallace, are living near Southport after several years in Houston and Appleton, Wis. Lee is with Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in New York. Their other daughter, Margie and her husband, Gordon Lenci '56, live in Elizabeth, N. J. Margie is still in charge of the Virgin Islands Tourist Information Center in New York and Gordon is a master at the Pingry School in Elizabeth.
Ed and Dora Flanders of Manchester, N. H., are bringing John Edwin, the class baby, to reunion. He will be just under a year old at the time of reunion and Reunion Chairman Hank Walker has arranged for a special badge and reunion hat.
Myles Lane is planning to leave for Europe right after reunion to study off-track betting. Chuck and Nona Bruder are also leaving for Europe a few days after reunion.
Two years ago Brad Parker acquired the Hotel Kaufman in Zelienople, Pa., northwest of Pittsburgh on Route 19 and has spread the fame of its Sunday dinners and Gay '90s cocktail lounge.
While in Buffalo for a convention we called Sam Magavera but found he was away for three weeks, and no one answered the phone at Frank Tindle's house.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth H. Merklee have announced the marriage of their daughter Susan to Bill Morton Jr. '59 on April 7 in Millbrook, N. Y.
Jim and Ruth Newton of Salem, Mass., have announced the engagement of their daughter Roberta to Derwin F. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lucian H. Brown of Excelsior, Minn. Roberta graduated from Colby Junior College last year and Derwin graduates from Dartmouth this year. A June 16 wedding is planned.
Mrs. Boice Gross of San Francisco recently gave Brandeis University a 25-room mansion in Weston which will be used for special training programs or conferences. Boice is a lawyer in San Francisco.
Chuck Bruder, former president of the Dartmouth Club of Bergen County, received the club's annual outstanding alumnus award. He was cited for his executive position with The Singer Manufacturing Co., his role in the building campaign of St. Elizabeth's Church of Upper Ridgewood, his work as a member of the YWCA Board of Trustees and his many contributions to college activities.
Harv Fisher is at home in Fair Oaks, Calif., convalescing from an intracranial operation in San Francisco in January. Betsy says he will be home until the end of the year. Harv is Purchasing Agent for Aerojet General.
Paul Knowles of Delray Beach, Fla., says, "As a so-called retired person I seem to have less time to do all the things that I want to do than I ever had before. I seem to have a knack for getting my nose into all kinds of affairs, which keep me very active and happy too." His younger son, Cyrus, who gets a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell in June, has just received a Ford Foundation scholarship and plans to go ahead for his doctor's degree.
