Twenty-two delights in the reports that Dartmouth received $30 million to expand and to modernize library facilities.
John W. Berry '44, of Dayton, Ohio, gave 25 million, the largest individual donation in Dartmouth's 223 years. His son, George W. '66, of Carlisle, Mass., and the family's Lorin M. Berry Foundation added $1 million each. The total includes $3 million given by George F. Baker III of New York, great-grandson of George F. Baker, the donor of Baker Library.
The current donations will be used to build a new library north of and connected to Baker. They will also update technology throughout the library system. Construction is planned to begin in 1997.
Baker was built in 1926 with an estimated capacity for a million books. It now has two million a far cry from the 1774 Dartmouth Library of some 300 books in the Hanover home of Prof. Bezaleel Woodward.
But now Baker is much more than a collection of books. Its personnel are widely acknowledged for their expertise and helpfulness. Students, faculty, distinguished visiting scholars, and alumni join in appreciation.
Over many years 1922 has had close and cordial relations with Baker. Twoter classmates were prominent in the origin and development of The Friends of Baker Library. For many years our class dues have provided for the addition of an inscribed memorial book for each deceased classmate. And the class has also established the Wilbur W. Bullen 1922 Memorial Book Fund. We of the pre-radio, pre-TV generation certainly loved books.
