1801

The Handel Society gathers to "promote true and genuine music." Charter members are required to bring a blank book to transcribe every song.

1870

After being taunted by other rowing teams, the Dartmouth Flotilla changes its name to the Scientific Boat Club.

1877

The Aegis records the founding of the Association for the Propagation of Co-Education.

1929

For want of an airplane, the newly formed Dartmouth Aeronautical Society grounds itself in lectures and discussions on "new phases in the flying game."

1954

Married students form a social organization. They name it Ball and Chain.

1959

Mu Kappa Gamma, more commonly known as the "Mystic Knights of the Grommet," establishes a Dartmouth chapter. The group's purpose is the promotion of "the gentle arts of bridge playing and beer drinking."

1965

Recognizing a "declining regard among undergraduates for the works and days of Johann Pachelbel and Millard Fillmore," the Friends of Johann Pachelbel and Millard Fillmore is established on campus.

1982

The Society for Creative Anachronism rates four photographs in the Aegis.

1992

The Dartmouth College Directory has 176 listings under the heading "Student Organizations." Among the new entries are a Robert Burns Society and a Ballroom Dance Club.

The National EnergeticRestless Dilettantes Inc.(NERD) pictured abovedid not leave a campuslegacy. Other campusorganizations have had amore enduring influence.
