Good old Bob Harvey, a compassionate secretary emeritus who has gone through dry spells himself, sends me some much needed news. He happily reports that the nameless nor'easter of December 11-12 spared his home in Essex, Conn., although flooding and wind damage occurred all around him. I hope other Connecticut Yankees and New Englanders in our class were as fortunate.
Sue Hall, widow of Frank, wrote to Bob Harvey on December 12 that she was weathering the storm in Garden City, N.Y., despite gale winds and heavy rain turning to snow. Frank Jr.'s reserve unit was scheduled for a full dress parade that day, but expected to be reassigned to patrol the waterfront areas.
Sue serves as a volunteer at a Long Island hospital where Larry Kryle performs his healing works, and he stops by occasionally to see her. Sue also gets together in Garden City with Bob Darbee's widow, Betty, and they talk Dartmouth.
More power to these loyal gals whose husbands are gone but not forgotten by any of us. If only there were more Women of Dartmouth clubs like Don Taber's wife, Betty, and her friends in Sarasota started about five years ago. The group, an adjunct of the Sarasota D Club, meets four times a year with programs of interest to the 40-plus local members. It's a great means of strengthening bonds among the wives, parents, and alumnae of all classes, and a special effort is made to include the widows. Maybe some '41 wives could start a similar group in their area with the encouragement of the local Dartmouth club.
News filters down from the Tobacco State that ever-active Hank Palmer has been appointed by the North Carolina governor to the Rural Economic Development Center board of directors. Hank was elected as a Rowan County Commissioner in 1990, and he will represent that area on the board.
Carol and Dan Provost report a change of address on the east coast, moving from the big house in Stamford, Conn., in November to a great condo in Mendham, N.J. (44 Hampshire Drive). They'll continue to spend December through April in California.
Bill Best writes from Kill Devil Hills, N.C., that he celebrated happy Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with his six children and four grandchildren in the New York-New Jersey area. Now he's looking forward to a late March visit to Florida, where his 103-year-old mother lives in a St. Petersburg nursing home.
Hopefully Bill and Marian will be able to attend the '41 mini-reunion in Sarasota on Friday, March 26, at the Fairways restaurant. The faithful gather at 11:00 for a third annual get-together, so all you snowbirds "come on down!" For last-minute reservations and directions, call Norm Locke at (813) 697-8582.
It's sure to be a memorable occasion, but some of our memories will be reserved for recently departed classmates, including LloydFishman who died on December 30 in Sarasota, Ed Acker on November 13 in Keene, N.H., Lewis Hart on November 24 at the Dartmouth Medical Center, and John Bates on November 29 in Tulsa, Okla. Our condolences to the families.
