Brown University recently announced the appointment of Fernando de Necochea as its director of financial aid. As director, Fernando will analyze the financial needs of admitted classes and continuing students, and he will counsel students and families. "During more than two decades of experience in the administration of higher education, Fernando de Necochea has proven himself to be a sensible and sensitive leader who is able to unite people and address complex issues effectively," Brown Provost Frank Rothman said. "I look forward to his arrival at Brown and to the leadership he will provide in one of the University's most important offices." Fernando (is it still "Nick"?) was executive director of the U.S.- Mexico Border Progress Foundation and, for 12 years prior to that, was assistant provost and advisor to the president of Stanford University. At Stanford he managed and served on the provost's task force that proposed widely debated fundamental changes in the Western culture program to include the study of a non-European culture. The proposal, extensively covered in the national media, was adopted by the faculty as a year-long study requirement for freshmen.
From The Seagram Company Ltd. comes news of tie appointment of Ed Falkenberg as vice president of the parent company. Ed continues as the company's controller and reports to Steven Banner, senior executive VP. "This appointment is in recognition of Mr. Falkenberg's long years of service with Seagram and reflects the increased complexities of his role," said Mr. Banner. Ed and his wife, Pat (Mt. Holyoke '64), still live in Scarsdale, N.Y., and have just about outgrown their two children, Christopher and Merrill.
One '62 who has outgrown the kids is BobSprafkin. Bob and Barbara's three sons are out in the wide wide world. Jeff '87 has a master's in Asian studies and is working on an M.B.A. at UCLA; Noah '92 is in marketing in the Big Apple; and Noah's twin, Neil (Trinity '92), is dealing with emotionally disturbed adolescents in Pittsfield, Mass. With all this new-found room, the Sprafkins did the logical thing ... bought a bigger house in Baldwinsville, N.Y. I would normally recommend a good psychologist, but Bob is one with the Veterans' Administration. He is also on the faculty of Syracuse University and SUNY Health Service Center and has co-authored an upcoming Allyn & Bacon publication entitled Social Skills for Mental Health.
Coupling mental health and our 30th Reunion in June is a reach, but so what? Tom Komarek and his Reunion Committee are fleshing out the schedule for our formal activities (June 14-17) as well as the weekend-before warmup (starting June 12). Be sure to stroke your psyche and attend. Also, if you can, give Tom a hand in the planning and execution. Call him at work, (202) 219-9086.
