Mercifully, we have made it through another U.S. Presidential campaign. We have had nine presidents who have guided our class since 1958 without a single impeachment or hint of porkbarrel (maybe some minor scandals, but so what?). In this year of the President, I give you the '62 presidents:
Currently at the helm is Gene Gasbarro, who used his successful 25th Reunion chairmanship to grab the number-one spot in 1987. Gene, who denies inhaling oregano, has guided us through the Big 50 and our Washington D.C. bash and into the 19905. In real life he runs a real-estate consulting firm in Providence and makes his home with Sandy in Johnston, R.I.
Gene's predecessor, Josh Rich, served from 1982 to 1987. During Josh's watch, the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship was established, we were Class of die Year for 1982-83, and Josh served as president of the Class Presidents Association. He and Karen live in Califon, N.J., and, if that isn't far enough in the sticks, they retreat to a cabin in Averill (look it up), Vt.
From 1977 to 1982 the history-making and ruthless fundraiser John Clark emphasized class cohesion through newsletters and Class Notes. He also nurtured a shy John Walters as his fundraising successor. John is our oldest doctoral candidate (studying history at Princeton) and lives with Norma in Ridgewood, N.J.
Chemical Bank's exponent of late fatherhood, Bill Pierce, fathered our class from 1972 to the Clark era, and his chief accomplishment was discovering a shy fundraiser, John Clark (picking up a pattern here?). Bill and Liz, with two sons under 12, live in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Fairlee, Vt.
In the late sixties Dick Hofinann did the honors after orchestrating our Fifth Reunion. After a stint as president of Continental Can, Dick established New Canaan Investments, a holding company of six packaging firms. Dick and Joan have five children, ranging in age from 28 to eight, and make their home in New Canaan, Conn.
Our first president after graduation was Steve Martindale, who has also presided over Kiemle-Hankins, an electrical supply/service company based in Toledo, Ohio, for 18 years. Steve and Chris have a son and daughter who graduated from Colgate and a second son in his junior year at Hamilton. Home base is Perrysburg, Ohio, just west of Averill.
South Carolina's gift to Hanover, ColinHarley, was our chief during junior and senior year. The high point of this ex-Lancer's tenure was talking down Campion's price on senior blazers—which eventually put Big Jim out of business. Colin practices law in New York City. He and his wife, Anita, have a son and daughter at home in Greenwich, Conn., and two grown sons in the wide world.
Our sophomore president, Paid Roewade, died in 1976, but not before leaving a legacy of class caring and sage advice.
He who carried us through freshman beanies and the Thayer riots was Dave Park. Dave is now the general counsel for the Boy Scouts of America based in Dallas. His wife, Lynne, is an M.B.A. candidate, while daughter Emily 16 and son Dave 12 keep things interesting south of Averill.
There you have it... nine honest presidents. At our 30th Reunion next June we will elect our tenth. Your recommendations for class officers are welcome and should be sent to Gene Gasbarro, 12 Tabor Drive, Johnston, RI 02919.
