In mid-March I visited our daughter Ellen, her husband, and our five granddaughters. Lucky me, to escape that storm of storms which ravaged the whole eastern U.S. I was told by family and friends in New Hampshire that they had snowdrifts up to their windows.
It was cold in Houston too, in the upper 20s, and all the beautiful flowers and blooming shrubs were covered with blankets for two nights! The week before we had been enjoying temperatures in the mid-80s. Anyone who has been to this part ofTexas during March or April knows what beautiful gardens to expect. Thanks to Lady Birdjohnson, wildflowers also bloom profusely along the highways.
Just before I left Hanover, I went to the Hood Museum to see again "The Veil of Saint Veronica," a painting which was given to Dartmouth some years ago by Tancie andDave Martin. One of the museum's most prized pieces, it is oil on panel, painted by the Dutch artist Gerard David who lived circa 1460-1523. The painting has made a deep impression on me, and I would certainly recommend a visit to the Hood on your next trip to Hanover to see this gift by a classmate. The painting hangs in die Joan Albright Gallery on the first floor of the museum.
Occasionally when I visit the Hood I eat lunch at the Courtyard Cafe and enjoy its sinfully good, greasy, Cajun-flavored french fries. I rationalize that anything tasting that good can't be that bad! (If I don't indulge too often!) Among all the busy students who eat there between classes, you almost feel like one of them again!
We have learned that Harry Lewis was recently named an honorary member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is now retired and still lives in Denver. He and his family have a great interest in the history and culture of many countries, and they have visited no fewer than 65 of them.
Joe O'Leary, who lives in Okemos, Mich., suffered a separated shoulder last October, and he was housebound most of the winter. We wish him well.
Larry Hale's widow, Marianna, visited in Florida with her sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and Alan Finlay, during the winter. We are always grateful for Rip's verses:
As the ills of the world about me grow My pain grows even deeper, As I realize, whether I will or no, I am my brother's keeper.
