The Man Who Could Not Arrive
On February 14, 1779, the eighteenth century's most successful explorer, Captain James Cook, was killed in a fight with native Hawaiians. Perhaps he had contracted the bad luck of his shipmate, John Ledyard, Dartmouth class of 1776. A tier witnessing Cook's demise, Ledyard returned to England and eventually set off on some of the most
remarkable explorations of all time. He may have covered more territory on foot than anyorie of his era, and yet he rarely succeeded in reaching his destination. Recent research shows: that this flamboyant atheist and Dartmouth dropout—the patron saint of the Canoe Club-was one of the unluckiest characters in American history, by Jerold Wikoff
