More from Dartmouth Goes Hollywood, our May reunion in West Hollywood, Calif.
Fritz and Janis Kern celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary during the Saturday of our reunion. Said Janis, who described herself as a docent in a cultural arts museum, "When I asked Fritz to marry me 17 years ago, I never thought it would be this fun."
Added Fritz, "I'm a grandfather three times." He also said he was the "founder of a company that depends on people like the Congers and Hadleys for its survival."
Bob and Kathleen Wendell were just days away from their 27th anniversary. The two married about the same time as he joined the staff of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Bill Horton said, "It's great to be celebrating our 32nd reunion and Daryn's and my 30th anniversary."
By the time you read this Bob "Otter"Anderson will have joined the ranks of the remarried with a July ceremony. His beloved, Ranny Riley, a psychologist and corporate consultant said she is "crazy about the Otter and glad he went to Dartmouth with so many well-rounded men who married interesting women." Otter is a founding and managing partner of a 14-person San Francisco law firm.
During the closing dinner on the Terrace of the Mondrian, I asked classmates and their wives to jot brief notes about themselves. I got a variety of messages, some profound, some newsy, and some just X-rated (and unprintable). Rev. Duane "Doberman" Cox wrote, "A long search continues to unfold, with Dartmouth becoming more and more important."
Roger Schulze, who flew in from Germany, where he works for the army, said, "Glad I came. The Dartmouth spirit is not dead." Roger, who has bought some property in Montana, added, "Come play golf in the Flathead Valley of Montana."
"We really got to talk for long periods and it was different from the normal reunions," wrote Mike Kirst, director of PACE (Policy Analysis for California Education) and professor of education at Stanford University.
Patty Mcelhinney, from Denver, wrote: "Met many new friends I would love to get to know better. It was a fabulous gathering. Let's do it again."
"For the second time in less than one year, I find myself at a reunion with Dartmouth 1961s," said Pete Palin, from Boca Raton, Fla. "It was a totally satisfactory experience."
"We should do this more often," wrote Phil Oehler, from Grass Valley, Calif. "It is a continuing education."
Class President Art Kelton said, "We're looking forward to doing this annually."
The next stop is New Orleans.
There was even some news. Pete Bleyler reports, "After 13 1/2 years in Washington, I am transferring to Boston."
Hank Gerfen reported that his son was just awarded a fellowship for Ohio State this summer as part of his Ph.D. program at Arizona. "He should get his degree next summer (his wife also)."
More next time.
