Alumni Award: Jerome Richard '54
OCTOBER 1994

Most students owe their college a debt of gratitude, but it's not every day that the faculty owes an alumnus a bouquet of kudos. Jerry Goldstein became the sponsor of the Dartmouth Distinguished Teaching Award in 1978, and, subsequently, of its companion piece, the Dartmouth Award for Outstanding Achievement in Creative or Scholarly Work. The prize money from these honors won't put good teachers behind the wheels of fancy automobiles, but they sure give them something to toot about.

Jerry's own horn blowing has been minimal, as he has quietly and modestly gone about the business of being a bear of a partner for 36 years with the New York City investment-banking firm Bear Stearns Companies Inc. His title is special associate director, and there is also something "special" about his other directorships and board memberships with such organizations as International Child Health, the American Jewish Committee, Wilkes University (where he is a trustee), the Lotus Club, the Westchester Land Trust, and Dartmouth's own Rassias Foundation.

Jerry graduated cum laude with highest distinction in government and was a Rufus Choate scholar. After two years in the air force and a subsequent pause, he honed in on his alma mater. He has been active in enrollment work, major gifts and reunion giving committees, a class agent, head.agent and regional agent, a member of the Campaign for Dartmouth Committee, and co-chair of the Parents Fund. In addition, he has been a member of his class reunion committee, class vice president, and is currently class president.

His family, of course, has always come first, and he and Dorothy and daughter Bettina '92 regularly find time for tennis, gardening, and antiquing. To say nothing of his most recent acquisition, a small farm in northern Westchester, where he can get away weekends for a check on his goats, birds, and assorted flora and fauna.

We salute Jerry for what he is and has been to his family, his business associates, his community, and his college. He has Dartmouth's undying gratitude, and we show it with unabashed enthusiasm by presenting him with this Dartmouth Alumni Award.
