Cutty Johnson was recently located on Union City Road in the "backwoods of Norwich," where he is the fifth generation of his family to reside in the town. He is engaged these days in "trying to enjoy retirement," and from his reports seems to be succeeding remarkably well. When he looks in the mirror each morning, he appears to be in good health, if a bit portly. Now alone, he finds great enjoyment in his garden and has had a great year with his planting. Tending a garden keeps one straight, he feels. After teaching at Clark School until 1951, he moved to the Thayer School, where he spent his career in electrical research, retiring in 1977. Everything is different on the Hanover scene from our days, he says, but he refuses to pontificate on the causes or implications.
When we talked with Al Allen recendy, we found that he was living in a retirement home, 501 La Posada Circle, #200 in Green Valley, AZ 85614-5104. We were sorry to learn that he was mostly blind and therefore had not been writing any letters lately. Having just come back from church on this Sunday morning, he was understandably anxious to get to his noontime meal, but still had enough time to recall our activities in the Spaulding Pool. (Where are the snows of yesteryear?)
Stan Whitman has long since called a halt to his long service as assistant city solicitor in Worcester, Mass., and has terminated his years of concurrent real-estate title examination. His main interest at present is his service as a member of the Massachusetts MidState Trail Commission, whose principal task is to improve and maintain a 92-mile hiking trail in the center of the state. The trail runs from Mt. Watatic on the New Hampshire border to Mt. Wachusett on the Rhode Island line. Already 30 miles of the trail are in shape with painted yellow triangles as markers. Stan would welcome any hikers like Al Gemberling to try out their paces on the New England scene. Stan and Thelma were preparing to take off for a visit to Ted and LauraAllen in Claremont when we talked with him.
