I recently received a newsletter from John Crane that chronicled the doings of a number of his fellow Casque & Gauntlet types. I felt that a few of the items deserved a larger audience. Keith Boykin continued his work on the Dukakis campaign into the summer, using his news experience to write and distribute press releases in Chelsea, Mass. In Cambridge, Peter Morse works for a market research firm. Lizzie O'Connell works in Boston for Arthur B. Little company (and her boss is named Mr. Small go figure!). Finally, as proof that not all C&Gers have moved to Massachusetts, I saw Feyna de Clercq on campus over Green Key. She was running around Hanover picking up last-minute items for the annual Trip to the Sea for which she was head cook.
Following a year on "the outside," more and more '87s are returning to school to pursue a variety of degrees. Michael Kong enrolled in a music and German program near Munich after traveling in Europe and Asia. Zinka Benton is a film student at N.Y.U. and Alison Obermann studies law atthe University of Texas in Austin. Sharon Grayzel was one of only a handful of outof-state students to be accepted at UPenn's veterinary school, and Stephanie Taylor plans to study nutrition and exercise physiology following a work stint at a health club.
Even graduate school isn't enough for a Few of us. Amy Strasser works for First Chicago bank by day and takes classes for her M.B.A. at the University of Chicago by night. She lives with Pam Haering, who does advertising work for DDB-Needham. Robin Appleby is holding down a teaching job while she attends school in Buffalo, N.Y.
In the nuptials department, strike the names Steve Lough and Darr Keiger from the list of eligible bachelors. Both were married last winter, although not to each other. John Gannon is engaged to Mary Markland '86 and is planning a spring wedding.
Back to the trenches of life in the corporate world: Erin Foster lives in Connecticut and is involved in printed promotional consulting. If that's a bit hard to follow, Erin offers this explanation: "I write junk mail." Jon Silverman left his 124 a.m. job editing newswire stories in California for greener pastures in Boston. Maybe Kathleen Joyce can help, seeing as how she does real estate marketing for Leggat McCall there.
The Valley News ran a terrific story in June about Crystal Crawford's success in delivering the message about higher education to her seventh grade students in Harlem. She began by setting up pen pals at Dartmouth for each of the children. The correspondence spawned a weekend trip to Hanover for nearly 40 of them, a trip that included visits to Dartmouth classes, a panel discussion on college life, and plenty of recreation and fun. Crystal summed up the value of the face-to-face encounter for her students by pointing out, "We know about alien customs but if we don't know someone who has experienced them firsthand, they stay alien."
