The New Hampshire legislature requires all men over 18 to join the military. Dartmouth students form their own militia.
1916
Students complain when the faculty grants academic credit for summer military training.
1918
All undergraduates over 18 are enrolled in the Student Army Training Corps.
1936
A thousand students vote to eliminate compulsory military training.
1943
The Navy V-12 program has an unexpected benefit for the Outing Club. The Chubbers talk the navy into giving them a truck and unlimited gasoline.
1969
The faculty votes to phase out ROTC over four years. The Trustees concur.
1983
Pollsters report that students and alumni overwhelmingly support the reintroduction of ROTC
1984
The faculty votes against the establishment of ROTC.
1985
The Student Assembly votes unanimously in support of ROTC. By a margin of three to one the faculty votes against an administration proposal to bring back ROTC. The program is brought to campus.
1991
The Trustees announce that unless the Pentagon changes its policy on homosexuals by April 1993, the College will discontinue its program.
1994
The Student Assembly votes to keep ROTC on campus indefinitely. The faculty votes overwhelmingly to "commence disestablishment of ROTC at the College." The Trustees vote to keep ROTC on campus.
