Norplant, the female contraceptive that remains effective for up to five years, was developed by a team of scientists led by Sheldon Segal '47, a medical researcher with the nonprofit Population Council. A significant step beyond the pill, Norplant is inserted just under the skin in the upper arm and provides women with reliable, continual, and reversible contraception.

Segal's Norplant can last five years.
