Gil and Jo Fernandez have been awarded the first-ever Allen Morgan Prize for citizen activism by the Massachusetts Audubon Society for their work as conservationists in revitalizing the ecosystems of southeastern Massachusetts. Their primary recent activity has been helping to restore the osprey population in the Westport River area. They have also recently been awarded one of five annual Sol Feinstok Environmental awards by Syracuse University for their lifetime' of dedication to conservationist objectives, including protecting wild ducks from the effects of DDT. Too bad to have missed Gil's talk at the reunion. The photo we saw from the local Chronicle showed the smiling couple with Gil wearing his widepeaked osprey cap.
Bill Emerson '34 has sent us for the class record the extensive obituary of Dick Goldthwait which appeared in the necrology section of the Ohio Journal of Science in December 1993. It described Dick's remarkable career in great detail, touching his 40 years of teaching, his varied areas of novel investigative research, and his expeditions into the world's cold regions, including Tibet. The memorial service which his colleagues at the Ohio State University organized in tribute to Dick was an impressive testimonial.
Many moons ago the Letters page of The New York Times Book Review carried a communication from Helen S. Manley demolishing the contention of a previously printed review that Greta Garbo had big feet. Not only was this not true, but Garbo resented the frequently repeated allegation. Nor was the actress a "loner," as had also been alleged, but a genial friend to a select company. Helen demonstrated the light touch characteristic of John, our late classmate.
The Class Treasurers' Association has sent a beef about the low percentage of alumni who pay class dues. Since dues pay for the Alumni Magazine and the postage for the class newsletters, adequate response is desirable. So, loosen the purse strings and send in the shekels!
