Sixty '48s plus family and friends enjoyed our 45th in Hanover June 13-16. It was a grand four days for which Chair Lloyd Krumm, outgoing President Bud Gedney and the reunion committee deserve our thanks. They arranged for fine weather and a great chance to renew old friendships as we enjoyed our college's call to return for more in '94!

The program began early on the first day when two cars rolling north on 1-91 in southern Vermont pulled into the same roadside rest stop at about the same time. The two drivers entered the same building, stood side-by-side a little while in one of the rooms, looked at each other, and suddenly recognized Warren Daniell and Foxy Parker. They think this was the first '48 reunion greeting in '94!

Headquarters for us was 102 Butterfield Hall, where committeemen Gil Shattuck and Joe Smith took our money and passed out programs and keys to rooms in that dorm and Russell Sage. The '48 tent was right outside and across Tuck Drive from the '49 and '5O tents.

Among friendship renewals was that of Hank Mueller and Mouse Taylor, who noted their sadness that Shorty Johnson and Pete Norton weren't also there. Another group was Ken Saunders, Ev Wilson, and Rog Zorn, who were found by old conspirator Ed Leede and brought into the '48 tent, where Ed also found former roommates JudgeBarlow and Bud.

Space prevents full recounting of program events. They included a presentation by and questions from the floor to Dr. Freedman an address by and questions to former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop '37 on "Guiding the Revolution in Medicine"; and a fun Glee Club concert exclusively by old-timers. The latter was capped by nostalgic "Dartmouth Undying" as rendered by all attending alumni, who went on stage for direction by George Barr '45, the same whose leadership won The Hum for his house on a remembered soft spring evening before Dartmouth Hall 48 years ago, the first Hum after WW II. Martin Sherwin '59 led a fascinating look back at Dr. Dickey's Great Issues course and presented photos from our undergrad days contributed by Bud and others. One was of our own Ed Curtis with John Dickey, another of a written summons to a friendly meeting with the one and only Lloyd K. Neidlinger (which brought down the house)!

The memorial service for '48s who have passed on, held in the sparkling white hall of the White Church, was led by Dick Bredenberg, serving for suddenly hospitalized Lou Springsteen. Few of us could hold back a tear of fond remembrance as Dick solemnly read one-by-one die 95 names of our departed comrades, the most moving moment of Our 45th.

The well-attended class meeting approved the report of Lloyd Krumm's nominating committee, under which Bud passed the class presidency to John Hatheway Jim Schaefer became our new VP, Gil Shattuck remains treasurer, and Bud becomes the '48 presence on the Alumni Council. Very warm applause of thanks was given by their classmates to those stepping down from their jobs of the past six years, particularly for the yeoman service of Bud (and Ginny!) Gedney. More on this next month.
