Chuck Thegze has written with blockbuster news, the likes of which may never again be equaled in "this column. Let him speak: "I'm engaged to a girl from Modesto, Patricia Stricklin, a charming illustrator here in San Francisco with an Oklahoma accent, who pronounces the word "football" with a drawl that would fit right in a Texas/ O.U. pregame party. Why do we always fall for these small town girls?" A blushing bride from Modesto! Can we turn them out or what? Fate should be so sweet to all of us.

Apparently the Thegzes will have to content themselves with weekend getaways to Modesto. Chuck is usually tied down as minister of production (i.e. the owner) of Hungarian Radio, a little company expatriated in San Francisco with answering machine capabilities in Budapest. In truth Chucks activities seem far more representative of capitalism at its best than of promotions in behalf of any nasty little East bloc regime. His operation produces unusual radio commercials described as mini-sitcoms. Prior to launching this independent effort Chuck built his reputation in advertising with Chiat/Day and Foote, Cone & Belding working accounts such as Levi's and Breyer's ice cream. He also produced a few flicks for ABC and NBC in Los Angeles during his headier days.

Chuck believes he is one of Dartmouth's few English majors ever actually to make money. He credits this to John Kemeny's (at the time seemingly useless) computer course, and to Chauncey Loomis for permitting a senior thesis on Buck Henry '55 and Mike Nichols. Nowadays you can spot Chuck hanging out with California s literati and would-be literati at the Fog City Diner. Chuck reports the latter group has included StuZuckerman and Steve Zrike '71.

There are several other briefer notes of import. Peter Kardon wants everyone to know that he's happily settled into a new place in Greenwich Village. Ever gracious, Peter offered his blessings for ongoing bashings of the Garden State as well as the regular update from Modesto. Peter is the director of planning for the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and busies himself there all day giving away money. Grant applications for your favorite cause should be forwarded directly to his Park Avenue suite of offices.

Although the news crossed my desk sometime since, congratulations are due to David"Tack" Burbank for his receipt of the distinguished Public Service Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association. Our informant was far too bashful to describe Tack's many activities in the public interest, but the honor is considered to be "a big deal." Tack will humbly provide details to all with inquiries and best wishes. He's in private practice in Pittsfield, Mass., with the firm of Cain, Hibbard, Myers & Cook.

Although it has been widely reported elsewhere, I wish to acknowledge here the recent and tragic death of Peter McKernan '93. His passing shook the campus and all who knew him. I know I speak for the entire class in extending heartfelt sympathy to Peter's father, John McKernan, his mother, stepmother, family and friends. All of you have been in our thoughts during these very troubling days.
