Don Scully came to Dartmouth in 1945 from western New York. He played midfield for Coach Tom Dent's lacrosse team and captained the 1949 squad. From 1947-49, as the Big Green built a 31-7 record, Scully scored 107 goals, a career record that stood for 30 years. He still holds the Dartmouth career record for three-goal games (20). As a senior, when Dent's rebuilding soccer team needed help, Scully stepped in at forward and scored two goals.
"Win or lose, all Tommy asked of us was that we play our hearts out. He probably influenced my life more than any person other than my parents," said Scully, now retired outside Buffalo.
It's this spirit that prompted Scully to make a named gift that will benefit Big Green men's and women's teams in lacrosse and soccer.
Join Don Scully and many others who have helped to sustain Big Green teams Some facts to consider:
Dartmouth's athletic program, historically one of the nation's largest, has virtually doubled in size over the past 20 years.
Over 1,000 student-athletes compete on 34 intercollegiate teams, and over 80% of the student body participates in some form of athletics.
Big Green men's and women's teams have won 20 league championships in the last five years, including three straight Ivy football crowns.
This broad program costs money. Revenue from ticket sales and other sources can't keep pace. It adds up to an impossible budget strain when Dartmouth is committed to controlling costs while maintaining academic and athletic excellence. YOU can help!
through the DartmouthAthletics Endowment, a $7.5-million objective in Dartmouth's $425 million Will to Excel capital campaign. This endowment will provide permanent income solely for intercollegiate and recreational athletics at Dartmouth. A variety of named gift opportunities to the Athletics Endowment begin at $10,000.
Or, you can support Big Green teams through the Athletic SponsorProgram, the lifeblood of athletic recruitment for all funded varsity sports, or through membership in a Friends group for a particular sport.
