What does the State University of New York in Stony Brook, Long Island, have in common with St. Lawrence University in upstate New York on the Canadian border? Why, four outstanding '63 scholar-teachers: Arnie Katz (medicine), Tony Knapp (math), Peter van Lent (French), and Tom Berger (English).
Arnie Katz, who teaches and practices ear, nose, and throat surgery at Stony Brook, has won a $25,000 grant from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The grant will be used to study the origins of fibroblasts, overgrowths of scars that sometimes result from face or neck surgery, or even from pierced ears. Formerly a professor at Tufts, Arnie joins Tony Knapp, math professor and author or co-author of five books, at Stony Brook. Arnie's Peruvian-born wife, Lillian, is a nurse. Daughter Rachell '97 plays rugby for Dartmouth, and her sorority recently purchased Arnie's old DU house. John David is at Washington & Lee, and twins Jason and Jennifer are in high school.
We've talked of Professor Tom Berger's Shakespearean exploits at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N. Y. Now there's Peter van Lent to recognize at the same university. An associate professor of French, Peter has been appointed to the Lectures in the Humanities program by the New York Council for the Humanities. He has another grant to translate, edit, and publish documents from the period of New France from the archives of Fort Ticonderoga. Peter specializes in Francophone ethnic studies and was chief field worker and co-curator of the Hidden Heritage Project, an exploration of French folk culture in the Adirondack and St. Lawrence River areas. Peter and Marjorie and the kids live on a restored sheep farm in nearby De Kalb Junction.
Freshman legacies keep on rolling! We've reported on Marc Lewinstein (Steven) and Douglas Heyman (Adam). We should add that Kathryn Bieneman (Jim), Jordan Richards (Stu) and Kytja Weir (Gordy) have joined the 1998 pea-greeners.
Enjoy it moms and dads! Before you know it, they'll be seniors like Kurt Bruggeman '95 and Brandon Prior '95, or perhaps law students like Gretchen Bruggeman '92. Kurt and Gretchen are children of California radiologist Bud Bruggeman. Brandon is the son of Ron Prior, a Huntington, N.Y., marketing executive.
Bud Bruggeman is part of an eight-doctor radiology practice in Southern Cal, a region which he says is a "hot-bed of managed care." His group runs a 24-hour service on exclusive contract with three hospitals, providing services on weekends through closed-circuit TV. By the way, young Kurt follows in Dad's tennis and squash footsteps. He won the Yale Invitational Doubles Tennis Tournament. Wife Ann is an interior designer and space planner.
Ron Prior's company John Prior Inc. exports automotive products. When he's not traveling, Ron's running the Junior Sailing Association for 1,200 kids from Connecticut, Westchester County, New York City, and Long Island. Ron and Sandra, a private-duty nurse, have four other children.
In Southern California, Tom Kenison is helping homeowners recycle their used sink water for useful purposes rather than simply sending it back through the sewer system. His gardener/landscaping/handyman business stays busy in Lakeside, 40 miles from San Diego.
