From the time the group assembled in the pleasant room at the Hanover Inn Friday afternoon, June 13, until the hasty farewells after the deluge that sent us all scurrying to Leverone Field House during the Commencement exercises on Sunday, the 70th reunion of the family of the class of 1899 at Dartmouth was a happy and heartwarming occasion. We enjoyed renewing acquaintances, reliving other reunions, welcoming Lord and Lady Dartmouth, seeing the '99 candle again glowing on our banquet table, and watching the opening of the Bicentennial year complete with ascending balloon.
We were pleased that two members of the class, Kenneth Beal and Hawley Chase, could come back and it was fun to see them leading the celebration Friday night as guests of Dean Thaddeus Seymour in his old Packard. We were proud as Kenneth Beal led the parade into the Commencement exercises on Sunday. And we wished that Paul Osgood, the third living member of the class, could have been with us.
The number who came to be part of 1899's reunion will indicate some of the affection that has bound the class together throughout the years. They were KennethBeal with three of his sons and their wives, the Arthur Beals, William Beals, and George Beals; Hawley Chase with his daughters and their families, the Peter McSpaddens, the John Berrys and also Mr. and Mrs. John Fairbanks. Mrs. Frank Musgrove with her son Frank Musgrove and daughter Mrs. Louise Pickering; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Butterfield, Mr. Howland Sargeant, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Allen, Mrs. Ernest Silver,"Mrs. Guy Speare, Mrs. Eleanor Dickey Drysdale, Mrs. David Parker, were present representing some of our beloved classmates. Last but by no means least, accompanied by their husbands were the three "Good Fairies of '99," Phoebe Storrs Stebbins, Ellie Brown Blanchard and Julia Fifield.
