JOHN BOWLER taught Physical Education, a.k.a. Smut, one of the few eight o'clock classes. It was generally hated because of the earliness of the hour. Doc Bowler always started off by startling us into wakefulness: "I simply cannot understand this. Here you are the flower of American manhood. And what do you do each morning? You lash yourselves with the second strongest stimulant known to medicine. Caffeine. And what is the strongest? Strychnine. And what is it used for? POISONING WOLVES."
