As Dartmouth prepares for the class of 1999, the College has already granted early acceptance to 338 applicants from a pool of 1,281. Eighty-nine percent of those accepted are in the top ten percent of their classes, including 66 valedictorians. For the first time women outnumber men in the early-decision pool: 173 to 161. With this increase in highly gifted young women coming to the College, a Dartmouth Woman of the Year may evolve. And the ancient class of 1922 may have a role model for future consideration. Twenty-two's nominations would include Jeannette Hotchkiss, for 57 years the wife of our classmate, Gene. He was a dedicated Dartmouth man, a former member of the Alumni Council, and the recipient of the Dartmouth Alumni Award. Gene died in 1980, and now the class has been notified that Jeannette died at her Highland Park, I11, home on September 29 at age 93.

Newspaper reports describe Jeannette as a graduate of the University of Chicago, a writer and community leader, and a member of The Writers. She was an authority on literature for children and the writer of several books, and many of her short stories and poems appeared in the Chicago Tribune. She was also president of the Highland Park League of Women Voters. And for distinction that may even be unique in Dartmouth history, Gene and Jeannette are survived by three sons, all of whom are Dartmouth graduates in the class of 1950. Frank has retired and lives in Laguna Miguel, Calif.; Jim lives in Hinsdale, I11., and is president of a Chicago investment firm; and Eugene, after serving as president of Lake Forest College for more than 20 years, is now emeritus. There are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

So, if some time in the future the College should designate a lady as the Dartmouth Woman of the Year, the pace will have been set by Mrs. Eugene Hotchkiss, the former Jeannette Sinclair Keenan of Nashotah, Wise.
