Autumn is my favorite season. This time of year, my thoughts turn to fall foliage in New Hampshire, Dartmouth football games, and figuring out which weekends I can get up to Hanover to enjoy both. The season is also a time of significant birthdays—my good friend Andrea Kormann Lowe '77 and myself included. I'm planning a trip to Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H., to celebrate mine.
I got a call from Charles Frierson, who currently lives in Brooklyn. He has been in N.Y.C. since 1977. Charles earned his master's in communications design from Pratt. He now works for N.Y.C. Transit as a computer typesetter, doing graphics and design work with forms and type. Charles was an art major at Dartmouth. It's good to see artistic talents used in a career. He is still a bachelor, and his main hobby is listening to music.
I had a long talk with Scott Mosenthal at reunion. Scott earned a Ph.D from Teacher's College at Columbia (graduate school of education). And I do mean he earned this degreehe did it all at night, while working, and completed it in 1984. Scott's career has been at Irvington High School in New York, where he currently teaches English to grades 9 through 12 and coaches two sports. Scott lives in Briarcliff, N.Y., with his wife, Pamela, a former first-grade teacher whom he married in 1984. They have two children: Schuyler 7 and Kirby 5. When Kirby goes to kindergarten, Pamela will re-evaluate whether or not to resume working.
Tom Davies has his own real-estate law practice in Austin, Texas. He graduated from U. of Texas Law School in 1980 and then worked for a large law firm before going out on his own. Tom met his wife, Ruth, in New Hampshire one summer, and married her in 1978. A Smith College graduate, she teaches high-school science and may be teaching in a new district starting this fall. Tom and Ruth have two children: Lillian 14 and Leslie 10.
Gretchen Teichgraeber is living in Darien, Conn., with husband John Neff '73 and their two children: Brendan 9 and Abby 7. Gretchen and John were married in 1982. After Dartmouth Gretchen worked for two years as a bond underwriter at Chubb & Son. She then returned to Hanover to attend Tuck, where she graduated in 1979, and has since been with Time Inc. She is currently the general manager of Sports Illustrated For Kids. John earned an M.B.A. from Wharton in 1978. He is VP with Nat West in capital markets.
Bill Barmeier has been living in Tiburon, Calif., for 15 years. In 1979 Bill graduated from Stanford with a combined four-year business/law degree. He then worked for a law firm for 14 years before joining Verifone, where he has been general counsel for the past two years. Bill got married in 1981, and his wife, Carol, is a lawyer with a San Francisco firm. Bill and Carol have two children, Julia 9 and Henry 6.
Hopefully I'll see hordes of classmates at a few football games this fall and catch up on some news. Even so, I'd like to pass on some inspirational thoughts basically plagiarized from Bob Conway '73 in his September column. That is, please don't underestimate the interest your classmates may have in your life. News of interest could be something as simple as the fact that you've moved. Your thoughts and opinions are also valued. So, please do take the time to get in touch at least once a year.
Until next time.
