The Winter issue seminar in this space on the age range that our class enjoys (?) elicited a few responses, which, of course, was one of its purposes. FredSmith, of Falls Church, Va., writes to say that he is two months and three days younger than John Waugh, your secretary's nominee for youngest in the class. Indeed, an extensive computer search of crucial records throughout our data bank reveals that Fred won't turn 66 until June 28.
Fred goes on to say: "I enjoyed our 45th, my first since our 25 th. The organizers did a splendid job. Although I retired from the Foreign Service ten years ago, I continue feeding at the public trough, working as a consultant at the State Department and the Arms Control & Disarmament Agency. One of these days I hope to be able to retire and to spend some more time at the house I recently bought in New Hampton, N.H.,some 50 miles southeast of Hanover."
A note on a Christmas card: "What a pleasant surprise those of us who are or soon will be 70 thank you for noting this. December 23 [was] my 70th. I'm lucky in that my age has not yet slowed me down. This year I got to Europe, Turkey, Azores, Alaska, Korea, Japan and Hawaii twice. As a retired marine I use Space 'A' to hop around the world while we still have a military force. Spend days raising a six year old great granddaughter due to death of her mother. She keeps me hopping." This hard to top report was from Charlie Fay.I'm not sure what Space "A" is, but I can recognize a Type "A."
Another '49er on the move is SamuelSmith, who has deserted the Hanover Plain for the foothills of Wyoming, where, in a town called Ranchester, he will scout for a permanent abode, or spread, or whatever they call it out there. He's near the Crow reservation, and when the ice goes out will be fishing with a number of buddies.
A1 and Joyce Wagner ran into Hankand Joan Williams and report that Hank is now in his third career, as assistant director for finance and administration at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass. Rockwell's the guy who gave family values a face.
You might want to drop Carll Tracy a getwell note. Carll and Barbara spent some time in Hanover around the new year hosted by Doris and Punchy Thomas while Carll underwent chemo treatment at Mary Hitchcock. He should back home at P.O. Box 5475, Laconia, NH 03247, by the time you read this.
I have a letter from John Stockwell, who lives in Melvin Village, N.H., on Lake Winnipesaukee. John reports that his wife, Nancy, died suddenly last fall. He writes that Nancy "is well known to '49.. .having been on campus all four years we were there—Green Key, football, Carnival, etc." John, who's still working fulltime, says he is "getting extensive support from a thoughtful cast of thousands," especially Doug Parsons, who helped arrange memorial services. Our sympathies, John.
