Tales from the Crypt, Volume XV, Chapter 3: So we've just closed the book on the worst bond-market performance in SO years, Mexico's post NAFTA disastah is making Ross Perot look like Jeanne Dixon, and Russia is slowly starting a Cool War so what? When the going gets tough, the tough get new sound bites. I'm embracing the T-shirt message I saw at the Chicago marathon: "Be All You Used To Be!"

Spit Happens: Jobs and Sculley may have foundered since leaving Apple, the earth is constantly doing the plate-tectonics version of the watusi, and the rains are enough to put Noah in the governor's mansion, but miracles still happen in northern California. AmyLadd and Doug Fitzgerald have at long last joined the ranks of parenthood. Lan Ladd Fitzgerald was born November 4 and Mom, the orthopedic surgeon, and Dad, the golf pro. are as pleased as punch. The only question is what will lan handle first—forceps or a four iron? Doug, does your wife work? "Yes, she's a mother." Amy, at what age will lan start golf lessons? "Fore months." Don't be disappointed if he takes up some other sport—like baseball. Hall of Famer Roger Hornsby once said, "When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it."

Who says you can never go home again? Bruce Duthu is now a visiting Native American studies professor at Dartmouth and loving every minute of it. Bruce is a former director of the Native American Program and was instrumental in the planning and construction of the new Native American House on North Main Street. Says Bruce in a recent interview, "I don't think I ever would have made it through (Dartmouth) without the program. Returning was an opportunity to pay back what it has offered me." Currently, there are 160 Native Americans on campus, and they represent 55 different tribes. Don't forget what Will Rogers said: "My ancestors didn't come over on the Mayflower—they met the boat."

Sweet 15 Update: Only 90 shopping days left until the greatest show on Earth opens in Hanover, N.H. From all points of the girdled earth the class of 1980 heeds the call. Based on the responses we've received so far, we are on track to break all 15th Reunion records. This could make Woodstock II look like a company picnic. Ann Munves Malenka, Edand Carla Boehm Sloan, and the rest of the reunion committee are working feverishly to make this one the best ever. However, if you are one of the few, the proud, the holdouts: now is the time to fill in the application, write out a check, and send them along. Go ahead and mark your calendars: June 16-18, 1995. The hills will be alive with the sound of laughter, wonder, and joy. I'll be the one in the T-shirt with this message: "The older I get, the better I was."
