Gideon Tiffany, an illiterate, opens a medical practice in Hanover.

At the behest of the Trustees, Nathan Smith becomes the town's first competent physician. He goes on to found the Dartmouth Medical School.

Reacting to an outbreak of typhoid fever at Cornell, the Dartmouth Trustees enlarge Hanover's watershed.

Statisticians at Alumni Gym find a link between obesity and poor academic performance.

The Hall family donates $226,000 to build an infirmary in memory of son Richard Hall '27. The building is named Dick's House.

A special campus committee reports that "the College must anticipate a considerable degree of interest in sex and should provide a means for sublimating this interest..."

The Safer Sex Kit makes a controversial campus debut.

A randomized doubleblind, placebo-controlled test of sniffling Dartmouth students concludes that a zinc lozenge decreases the misery of a common cold.

The condoms and cold medicines available for free at Dick's House are a drain on the College budget. College officials compensate by marketing those items from convenient vending machines in Thayer. Students complain about high prices.
