Excerpts follow from letters written by the two recipients of the Class of 1922 Scholarship. The students are in the class of 1997.
The young man has written: "Thank you for the scholarship. I am currently thinking about majoring in religion with a minor in economics. My grade-point average was 3.4.
"I am a member of the downhill ski team, which takes a lot of time but is incredible fun. I am also very active in scouting, having recently received the Vigil Honor for exemplary leadership. I also enjoy reading, camping, canoeing, and fishing. Thank you again for your help."
The young woman has written: "Many of the courses I am taking with a major in biology are related to the prospect of medical school. I finished last year with a GPA of 3.7.
"Last summer I worked as a research assistant in a large hospital. The project concerned the effect of insufficient oxygen on premature infants and so-called 'blue babies.' This year I hope to attend the Physician's Shadowing Program in which I will learn from experience of the daily routine of physicians at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
"Thank you for your assistance. With it I look forward to continuing the extraordinary opportunity Dartmouth offers."
With profound regret I report the death of Carroll Dwight on January 18 in a Boston hospital. An obituary will follow, but here it is pertinent to add that under his stewardship the 1922 Scholarships were developed. Carroll was class treasurer for more than 40 years.
