Dartmouth's successful completion of the Third Century Fund was heartening to '22. Successful, that is, in terms of dollars and prices as they were several years ago when the Fund was initially projected. With an anemic stock market, tremendously in- creased building costs and other higher prices everyone knows only too well, the accomplishment does not put the College on easy street—indeed far from it. But it would have been disastrous if Dartmouth's fellowship had let the College down on such an important occasion. As a class, '22 came out with an excellent record. 144 Twoters—exactly fifty percent of the living members—contributed to the Fund. Some Twoters—including some beloved and loyal widows—gave most generously. Sometime, the amount '22 contributed will perhaps be specifically known. If so, every Twoter will be proud of the result. Many classmates and class sons worked diligently on the Fund. They included Gray Bates, Regan Brown, Harry Bruckner, Bill Bullen, Herm Carlisle, Haskell Cohn, Warren Daniell, Jack Dodd, Carroll Dwight, Scribner Fauver '62, Charles Henderson '62, Frank Horan, Gene Hotchkiss and James '50, Carter Hoyt and Carter Jr. '49, John Kemeny, Killy Kilmarx and Robert '50, Andy Marshall, Jim Maze, Ike Miller, Stan Miner, Len Morrissey, Wally Mountcastle, Wes Nutten and Wes III '51, Scott Rambach '54, Robert Sands '59, Spenny Smith, Modie Spiegel and Edward '53, Paul Spiers '47, Don Tobin, Fred Vogel, Peter Vos Burgh '52, Thomas Waterman '59. To all who contributed in money, work, or both, the Class gives its heartfelt graditude.
Many classmates have had their pictures in newspapers, but it seemed most news- worthy to see John D. Dodd on the front page of the January 19 Dartmouth. Jack was one of three Dartmouth trustees who spent a Saturday afternoon with a group of students. The discussions involved subjects such as communication between students and trustees, student leadership, the quality of life on campus, and the financial situation of the College.
It is sad to report that Ruth Wood, widow of Richard G. Wood, died January 15, 1971 in a Berlin, N.H., hospital. She had been hospitalized in November, and after two operations there seemed a promise that she would pull through, but on January 15 she had a coronary arrest. The Class will always miss Dick and Ruth who loyally attended its gatherings.
As '22 proudly marches toward its 50th Reunion in June 1972, the Class has arranged some most enjoyable convocations for this current year of 1971.
Our annual Little Reunion at the Hanover Inn will be this coming April 16- 17. That Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock there is varsity baseball vs. Yale. After the game we'll all gather in '22's Hospitality Room (B.Y.O.L.) at the Inn. Plans for the 50th will be high on the agenda for the class meeting Saturday morning in the Hospitality Room. Saturday afternoon has varsity baseball with Brown, varsity tennis-Columbia, freshman tennis-Andover, and freshman track-Andover. Around 5 o'clock we'll have cocktails in the Hospitality Room and the class dinner will be 6:30 in the Drake Room.
It will be assumed that all staying at the Inn will attend the class dinner. Any exceptions will please notify the class scribe before April 15. Classmates not staying at the Inn but planning to attend the Saturday evening dinner will please call Hanover 643-4262 before April 15. In fact, whenever you are coming to any '22 luncheon or dinner in Hanover, please let Ike Miller or Len Morrissey know in advance. It avoids embarrassment and you'll be loved more for advance notification.
Now get your room reservations from the Inn and be sure to say you belong to '22. And '22 will belong to you for a most cordial weekend, April 16-17.
The Class will also have two fine get- togethers next October. Ike Miller has made the necessary advance payment to Howard Johnson's White River Motel for a block of rooms for both the Penn game weekend, October 8-9, and the Yale game weekend, October 29-30. These rooms will be available for a minimum of both Friday and Saturday nights on either or both these weekends. The Penn weekend will be at the height of the foliage season and the Yale game weekend marks the return of an Eli varsity football team to Hanover after an absence of 87 years. So, if you want a room for Friday and Saturday nights on either or both these weekends, please notify Ike of your intentions now. His address is Gen. Walter I. Miller, Thetford Center, Vt. 05075, and his telephone is 802-785-2012. The Class hopes to have you and your missus, of course, at all these 1971 assemblies beginning with Little Reunion, April 16-17.
