On February 13, in anticipation of Valentine's Day, five '45 classmates and their permanent sweethearts gathered on the outside deck of The Ship's Lantern restaurant in Englewood Fla., for a snowbird mini, Gabfest and face-feeding session that lasted into mid-afternoon. Making up this distinguished group were Harry and Peg Hampton, John and Barb McCauley, Howie andAlice Sawyer, Moe and Jane Fry, and Charles and Joan Rowan. Conversation ranged from politics to current affairs to tales of other classmates. A great session! Four of the couples will attend our reunion in June. All remembered to attend the luncheon, although one classmate barely made it because he forgot the secret code to unlock his car. (He'd only had it nine months.)
A message from Dean Miller: "I have been in practice in Milwaukee area since early fifties internal medicine. Gladys and I have seven children. Not going to quit yet; possibly five more years. [Meaning medical practice, I assume.] We'll see you next June with one of our children. The reunion will be much fan. Going to call Ginny Ewell, Bill Portnam and others from the 'maybe' Gile group. Our class was split, but it's amazing how many I'll recognize. Our class officers have done a wonderful job." Amen to that.
Excerpted from the Maine Historical Society Bulletin (John White, president): "Cole & Co. Movers, the name bestowed on a team of volunteers by Director Elizabeth Miller, are five retirees who help relocate things and set up collections. 'Without them, we'd really be stuck,' she notes. Don Cole a 70-something retired dermatologist and self described talky guy,' helped organize the group during the summer of 1993. 'All of us are midsixties and older,' Cole says. 'All but me are engineering types, so they have lots of smarts about moving. The first time we did something, I was amazed. Here comes Jim McFarlane with a skateboard. He's even older than I am! But he used the skateboard as a minidolly.' Cole and Company: keeping us on the move."
"Fulltime in Florida for four years," writes Bob Stum from Bonita Springs. "Developers turned community over in October, so, naturally, I had to get involved. Am president of homeowners, and it's fun to catch hell every day. Joined the local Dartmouth group, which includes seven other '45s; haven't seen one to date."
In kailua-=kaona Hawaii, Paul Glover writes that he lunched with Pai U classmate Bill Rolph who lovingly tends his kona Mountain coffee. Bill will "try" to make the 50th; Paul should be a definite "yes."
Remember Ledyard Bridge? It was replaced once, since we were in Hanover. Now, it s slated to be replaced again. Small surprise that it caused one of the biggest brouhahas in that area in eons. Dick Mackay was quoted in the press, 'You are lobotomizing West Wheelock Street. These plans are a menace to the town. The plans have since been modified, and construction starts soon.
