39 A couple months ago we cleansed our conscience by confessing to some firstclass mistakes that appeared in this column. There was one we neglected to mention. The April column referred to our distinguished class agent, Jim Corner, as "Tim." Now most have to know that this was a misprint on somebody's part, and we're willing to take the blame. Ahh...we feel much better now.
Doc Tower paid us a surprise visit at our winter quarters in Vero Beach in late February. He was on his way toward the west coast of Florida, where he agreed to serve as our field reporter, covering the annual bash at Betsy Wyman-Emmons's digs in Naples, held on March 8. He was as good as his word, and called to relate some 13 couples and four singles, besides the hostess, in attendance. Those present were the Wells Bates, JoeBatchelders, Bob Clymers, Jack Cummingses, Bob Cushmans, George Hannas,Bill Greens, Bob Kaisers, Lou Highmarks,John Davenports, Gordon Kings, FredUptons, and Bill Tomkinses, along with Norma Blunt, Millie White, and Bert Mac without Sally, who was at her Long Boat Key home tending to family.
We met the younger brother of Skip Morse at a Dartmouth Club lunch here in Vero, and he advised that Skip and Penny were due in for a visit. Sure enough, Skip gave us a jingle the eve of our scheduled early-morning departure for the wonders of Kennedy Space Center. Foolishly, we did not take his telephone number, and we've been awaiting a return call from Skip ever since.
Local rumor has it that Dick and BarbaraBrooks are vacationing at Grand Harbor, Vero Beach. As yet we haven't made contact.
Our trip to Cape Canaveral, just a few hours north of Vero, was with Endy andJeannie Smith, who spent a few months this winter at The Moorings in Vero Beach. Endy is now beautifully recovered from a bypass operation and has spent considerable time on the area golf courses.
Speaking of recoveries, we had a pleasant telephone conversation with George andGinny Neiley a few days ago. George has bounced back almost all tie way from a stroke he suffered last summer. Along the same line, a note from Ralph Holben states that he is splitting his time between his home in Hanover and Bucks County, Pa., where his wife, Gudrun, is in a health center. She is confined to a wheelchair but otherwise is in good health and spirits. That is good news.
Bill Risley, an oft-time resident of Vero Beach whom we only spotted on one brief occasion this winter, favored us with an invitation to a golden jubilee luncheon at the local Moorings Club on behalf of Old Sturbridge Village. Bill, as an honorary trustee of this national museum in Massachusetts, was hosting the event, and we were sorry we could not make the outing. Have a great summer!
