It's never too soon to start planning for a major reunion. Our 45th will be June 10-13, 1996. Block those dates out, and ignore the bad date information we gave you two issues ago.
The March mini found Donna and JoeWelch hosting other '51s from their room at the Hanover Inn. Kathy and Bob Hustek were back; Barbara and Dick Ellis were there, as were Nase Hurowitz, Bill Beasley, Babs and Dave Hall, Peggy and Dick Price, and Amy and Henry Nacliman. The group dined together and attended the basketball game.
Bob Hustek gave the group an overview of his 12 years of class-project stewardship. Since 1987 we have spent $36,350 on 32 projects directly involving 2,860 people, most of them recipients of tickets to various events occurring on campus. Additional thousands have viewed the earliest known painting of Dartmouth Hall (given to the Hood Museum by our class); another thousand people were entertained by the Barbary Coast band, whose tour of eight regional schools we sponsored; and hundreds have used the John Dickey Conference Room, which we furnished.
Tickets have gone to the staffs of Dick's House, Dartmouth residence custodians, Buildings & Grounds, Hanover police and firemen, the Howe Library, the Dartmouth Dining Service, Housekeeping, White River Hospital veterans, seniors, Hanover and Lyme Boy Scouts, and others. We distributed 500 tickets to financial-aid students for events at the Hop; and 500 tickets to students and youngsters for the February Women's Basketball Weekend. In March of this year we chartered a bus to take fans and band members to the women's championship game with Harvard in Boston.
Who knows how many have sat on the '51 bench installed on Main Street in Hanover? Or how many youngsters have read the books given to the Howe (town) Library in the Book/Buddy program? Nor do we know how many have ridden the horse we gave to Morgan Farm for the Therapeutic Riding Program.
We've supported two artists-in-residence and a museum intern, and we funded an Arts Education Series for Hanover elementary and high-school students. Most recently, we established the Class of'sl Award, a $1,OOO prize to the student organization we judge most effective in presenting its concern for the community. The first award, in 1994, was split between the Dartmouth Chinese Society for their celebration of Chinese New Year, and the Chinese Students Association, which sponsored a seminar on traditional Chinese medicine.
As you read this, Dartmouth coaches and players will be conducting clinics in all sports for 200 area children. They do this in connection with the KIDS/COPS program of Hanover and nearby police departments, Which we support.
Bob Hustek says, "The projects served as a vehicle to express our gratitude for the many acts of kindness and love bestowed upon us as students and as alumni." Bob always helps make something happen for people who might not be able to enjoy these events on their own. Through his dedication, the class of'51 enjoys the reputation of a group of people who give something back to Hanover. Thanks, Bob. Well done.
