Peter Bogardus accepted my invitation to guest-write a column of news from out west. Heeeerrr's Bogie! (and I quote): The day after I told BillBrooks I'd contact some West-Coasters for this issue, Ira Michael heyman was featured in The San Francisco Chronicle as the leading candidate to run the Smithsonian. Mike moved to Washington, D.C., lastyear to help Bruce Babbitt as assistant secretary of the interior. Mike was a director and member of the committee seeking a new Smithsonian chief when the committee decided he was the ideal person for the job. Watch the news for the outcome.

Don W. Smith, M.D., gave me an earful when we chatted recently. Don still practices in the Palo Alto area. He stays in contact with the College through his directorship of the Hopkins Institute. Currently he is concerned about the financial shape of the College and wonders why it could cost $100,000 for a Dartmouth education. Don would like to see a cut in administrators and excess faculty. Call him at (415) 326-1068 if you have any thoughts on this.

Jim Danaher also lives near Stanford University. He has not retired from his law practice of 35 years. However, he's taking more time off, starting with a trip last January to Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa, where he saw "every damn animal except the kangaroo." Jim promises he will be at our 45 th Reunion.

Moving to Hawaii, I found that Bill Monahan lives the great life there on the island of Maui. Bill is chairman of a non-profit organization called Self Help of People, which endeavors to start projects that help the Hawaiians help themselves. Currently they are revitalizing Hawaiian fishing ponds for commercial use. Bill said he enjoyed the last minireunion he attended and is planning on the 45th.

Tom Barnett is still working in Houston, Texas. His company, Cook Paint, was recently acquired by Total Petroleum, the French conglomerate. Tom had just returned from the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta. No, he didn't play, just watched.

Charlie Richardson is a practicing attorney in the San Francisco area. He still has a shingle out for friends, doing estate planning and probate work. He sees Harry Berwick frequently when Harry visits the Bay Area. In fact, I ran into both of them in Wood's (Bohemian Grove) where Charlie was wearing his Dartmouth Indian sweatshirt. Charlie is close to retirement and is off to Greece in September for a wedding party.

When Jay Fiedler '94 quarterbacked the East team in the East-West game at Stanford University Stadium last January he was voted the outstanding offensive player for the East team. He was the first Dartmouth quarterback since our own John Clayton, who won praises when he played 44 years ago. You can see John at our 45 th as well because he is cochairman, along with Dick Price. I'll see you there if you don't visit San Francisco first and call me for a free lunch!

Thanks, Peter. (One complaint from the proprietor: what are YOU doing, Pete, other than hosting lunches?) As we start another season keep your friends informed through this column. Note my Compuserve number.
