Thirty-eight was represented on Class Officers Weekend by Gil Tanis Jim Chandler, Bob Reno,Henry McDuff and widows Tina Towne and Phyl Hill. Gil reports that nothing of class significance transpired except to say that once again '38 will exceed its '95 Alumni Fund objective. Our congratulations to his happy band of solicitors and to all you contributors! All calendars should be marked for our reunion on Saturday, September 30. You should have received my initial letter with the pertinent details. The follow-up is on the way, or possibly in your hands right now. Please do not leave me hanging. State your intentions.
I trust you noticed in the June DAM the obituary listings of three more of our classmates: Ted Hunter, Arthur Robbins and Gene Dupont. Class sympathy goes out to their survivors.
It is my understanding that this column is to be used primarily to share news of your activities with your classmates. But now, as of June 7,I am out of news. It is hard for me to believe that at least one or two of you are not doing, have not done, or will not be doing something that would be of interest to us all.
Since the mail bag is empty I must improvise items that are not current but which I hope will tickle your fancies.
Gwen Dunbar, Howie's widow, sent me Howie's tattered program of the 1935 Silver Anniversary Winter Carnival. It was published by the Dartmouth Pictorial and includes many campus snow scenes and sculptures. How many recall that the highlights of that carnival were the Outdoor Evening presentation featuring Evelyn Chandler, the worldchampion women's figure skater, and the Dartmouth Players production of The Piratesof Penzance in Webster Hall? Gwen also included the program of the 1935 Green Key Weekend. Remember the trains arriving at the Hanover and Norwich stations on Friday afternoon? Or attending the prom Saturday evening in Alumni Gymnasium? There we danced until 4 a.m. to the music of the Dorsey Brothers and Fletcher Henderson's orchestra, featuring Kay Webber and Bob Crosby as vocalists.
That's it for now. Be back next month!
