John Smillie, our retired ophthalmologist from Ann Arbor, Mich., proudly writes, "My granddaughter Ellen is a freshman at Cornell thanks to help of a $9,800 scholarship. Her 3.95 GPA at Huron High was an essential, of course, but what really counted was that she was at the top of the track coaches' recruiting list." Might we be seeing her in Atlanta in 1996? John himself has been elected a trustee of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club's permanent endowment fund.
The recent issue of Dartmouth Medicine tells of Austin Grant still doing thoracic surgery. Does Austie have the class record for years in surgery?
Fred Becker writes from Babylon, N.Y., "I have a son who graduated from Dartmouth in 1959 with other sons of '38 classmates. Said son has two sons, namely Jeffrey and Todd. Jeffrey is now a junior in the class of '96, and I have just learned that Todd, the younger brother, has been notified of early placement in the class of '99." Does this chain of events make Fred the class patriarch?
'38 has lost two of its loyal members, J. Clark Barrett and John G. Nelson. Clarkie was our class president from 1978 to 1982, and John was manager and captain of the squash team.
Dr. Clinton Pickering checked in with an excellent activity report. He still practices dentistry on a limited basis in Kearsarge, N.H., his retirement home after a move from Lynn, Mass. His is a family of dentists, including his late father and his younger brother who practices in Princeton, N.J. However, Clint was unable to convince his two sons to take up the drill. His daughter in Denver, Colo., is the dean of the faculty at a private school. Clint stays close to the fire, enjoying his family and golf. He has four grandchildren and recently became a great-grandfather. "This makes me feel real old."
