Intrigued by the capacity of the administration to invent new programs, to proliferate staff positions, and to create new periodicals, we were fascinated to receive recently a copy of the Coed, Fraternity and Sorority News published by the Office of Coed, Fraternity and Sorority Administration with Deborah Reinders, assistant dean of residential life for CFS administration as adviser. Of interest to octogenar ian fraternity brothers was the item announcing the formation of a new committee, the CFS Committee on Diversity in Programming (CODP) whose purpose was described as "promoting diversity." The Office of Residential Life, it was reported, has earmarked a sum of money to finance programs supporting this objective. Richard Hovey's "birds of a feather" is no longer the ideal in campus get-togethers.
One of the rewards of compiling this column is learning of the widely differing, but uniformly creative activities, of our classmates whose achievements we cannot describe fully in the obituary space allotted to us.
We thought of this in connection with the career of the late Al Strock who, as Dr. Alvin E. Strock, dental surgeon, had become an inventor who developed the first successful technique for human dental implantation. This won him international recognition as "The Father of Dental Implantology" and his honoring as a dis tinguished alumnus by Harvard. He had also invented a revolutionary toothbrush design, a chewable plaque-fighting tablet, and a device to deal with lower-back pain. At his death, he was working on a protective body appliance to reduce the risk of hip fracture. During WW II he had served effectively with the U.S. Public Health Service, where he developed the oral use of penicillin for combating periodontal infections that had formerly been disabling. To cap all this, he conceived and brought to reality a well-known private community and a country club and golf course at Martha's Vineyard, where part of his practice and living time was spent. Quite a career for this old Boston Latin boy! Mini-reunion: September 20,-21.
