Because this issue is devoted to the women who have meant so much to the College and the classes throughout Dartmouth's history, President Bill Mercer stated, "After 56 years out of college, we feel our women are a vital part of our class."

Wish a questionnaire could have been sent to classmates regarding support of the College and our class by wives and daughters. However, we know the following:

Ann Porter Berger first recorded class activity by helping husband Fred Porter as head agent 1950-52. Then was involved in the 15th Reunion in 1956. Since 1974 we have known Ann as memorial gifts coordinator. Her work with widows on the Alumni Fund has been outstanding. Much of the success has been due to Ann's accomplishments. Of equal importance has been her constant communications with the growing number of class widows. The sincere and attentive contact has endeared her to many widows and has maintained continued interest in the class of 1940.

Carla Manley's (John) enthusiasm knows no bounds an adviser to College sororities; great supporter, with John, of football; hostess for parents of football players; and instrumental in organizing a program to introduce children with special needs to horses and riding. Joan Martin(William) as co-bequests chairperson since 1992 has been effective in placing the class fourth in the amount of money given and 21st in the number of gifts.

Crosbie MacMillen (Bob) has been a part of Hanover for many years. How many sons and daughters of the class looked to her as a surrogate mother? How many years did she and Bob open their Lyme farm for mini reunions? How many first-time reunion classmates were made to feel at ease? Crosbie's hospitality is a reason 1940 is such a congenial group.

Eoise Smith (Page) attended the Art Students League in N.Y.C. and became a respected artist. In January 1995 she was honored with a retrospective exhibition in six Santa Cruz, Calif., galleries. The Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery is on the courtyard of Cowell College, U.C. Santa Cruz

And, of course, our mothers.
