Do any of us have favorite memories of years on campus 50 years ago? Joe Eisaman was quick to respond: 1)visittoTanzi's for a late-night case; 2) memories of "Cousin" Fletcher, and his shop of no-nos; 3) weekend trips to Vassar and Well Lesleys (There's something about this sequence, Joe, that makes me uneasy, or envious.) Folks, send us your favorites, and we'll see how many match up.

We have word of a new classmate, also with memories, because he contacted the College and asked to be a '47: James N.Jordan, 1022 10th Ave., North, Surf side Beach, SC 29577; phone (803) 238-5555.

Jim was in Hanover 1944 and '45 with V-12, and graduated elsewhere. There may be hundreds of disgruntled non-'47s, from other schools and classes, hoping to join our great Dartmouth class of 1947. This may be starting a trend. Send in your survey form, James, and we'll know you by Reunion.

Here's one under the heading, "why didn't I think of this?" I received, a note and photo of a pretty young couple, he in the cap and braid of a naval officer, she radiant, a newly married couple. The note: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brazel of North Bend, Ore., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, June 22, 1995. Ernie and Shirley certainly look in great shape in that picture. After a 35-year career in retail management and advertising, he retired, and she retired from her store in 1987. They are active in church work and visiting shut-ins. Their two sons and one daughter, with families, are all on the West Coast, for a close family.

Now, here is some real news: WalterPeterson has been unsuccessful! After 20 years as president of Franklin Pierce College, Walter would retire amid a wave of love, respect, and best wishes. He and Dorothy would travel, visit, rest, he thought. This episode has to be called a failure, as they did none of those. He was asked by New Hampshire to serve as interim head of UNH, as it continued a lengthy search for a president. Walter agreed to a one-year term, displaying an evident weakness for serving his community.

Now a word on campus activities: Dartmouth has a new enterprise; an organic farm three miles north of campus on the river. The farm will serve as a demonstration and learning farm, and will also provide organic produce to dining services, Hanover Inn, and others. The impetus was provided by Jim Hourde quin '97. Coming just 50 years after our own class, there may well be some magic in the class of '97, and in that half-acre farm. Visitors to campus should stroll north to see where the old hospital was; some of it has been demolished, some saved for use. Dick's House is still intact, but open spaces are coming here.

In September Thayer School welcomed new Dean Elsa Garmire, succeeding the popular and successful Dean Hutchinson, Dean Elsa, from USC, is a hands-on leading scientist, now leading Thayer. She is very impressive, and it all bodes well for the engineering school.
