I'd be willing to bet that the only post-Impressionist in the whole class of 1949 is Mike Gish unless advised otherwise. Mike, who took his easel and oils to both Desert Storm and Somalia for the Marine Corps, says he may not get to Bosnia. But that's okay, he's been working hard anyway and the results were recently displayed at a largish exhibition of his recent œsuvre at his Westport, Conn., studio a nice mixture of oils and watercolors. While it would be great to imagine that everyone in the class of' 49 might elect to hang a Gish, there may not be quite enough to go around. But asking couldn't hurt, (203) 226-5553. In the meantime, while he awaits your call, Mike has a commission to do a number of landscapes not far from Dartmouth for a local patron of the arts, works that when completed will document the four seasons in Norwich, Vt.
If you're a loyal or even occasional viewer of C-Span, every once in a while you'll see Sen. Slade Gorton doing his thing for his constituents in the state of Washington, as well as for the rest of us. If, on the other hand, you're among those whose eyes glaze over at intra-Beltway activities, you might not be aware that the only Green alum in the Senate wrote The Washington Post that the Endangered Species Act is endangering the jobs of 30,000 people in the Northwest, while its half-billion dollar investment in salmon recovery "has yet to save even one fish." A lox on both your houses.
Out in Montana, in December, SamuelSmith was married to Senora Early of the Crow Nation. T.R. Yellowtail acted as tribal sponsor and John Pretty on Top, a Crow medicine man, performed the Baha'1 ceremony. The couple, after a couple of months in Las Vegas, are back home in Ranchester, Wyo. Congratulations and best wishes.
When the Lebanon Kiwanis Club elected new officers recently they tapped ChetPalmer as treasurer, which makes sense since Chet is a practicing public accountant with his own firm.
Ort Hicks lost his mother on Jan. 2. She was 96. For the past few years Lois and Ort Sr., who also survives, have been living in Kendal, the retirement community on the Lyme Road. Sympathies to both Orts and the rest of the family. At presstime we learned of the deaths of Joe Sullivan and Pat Quirk. Our sympathies and more information next month.
Most of you know that Skip Ungar is not only back on his feet, he's been back on the golf course fore times. Incidentally, it has been suggested (by me) that in his widely read newsletter Skip might occasionally consider switching his poetic muse from limericks to, say, haiku: Limericks amuse but praise the poets who take a turn for the verse. And if not haiku, iambic pentameter's another option.
