Maine celebrated Dr. George D. Snell Week March 14-21, as proclaimed by Governor Angus King Jr. '66. The proclamation reads: "Whereas, Dr. George D. Snell of Bar Harbor received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for basic research with mice which lead to a better understanding of organ transplants and infectious diseases; and
"Whereas, Dr. George D. Snell has dedicated his long life to medicine and medical research, a labor which has enriched the lives of mankind and left our planet a greater place to enjoy a healthy life; and
"Whereas, following the completion of his impressive educational career at Dartmouth and Harvard in 1930, and following three years of research at various institutions, Dr. Snell arrived in Bar Harbor, Maine, and began his lifelong association with The Jackson Laboratory, a relationship with that great institution that continues to this day; and
"Whereas, Dr. George D. Snell has also contributed to humanity through his extensive published writings in the areas of philosophy, ethics, evolution, and the science and ethics in shaping our modern society; and
"Whereas, this true paragon of strength and rectitude exemplifies for all generations here in Maine what one person can do to make the world a better place by reaching to reach one's own fullest potential,
"Now, therefore, I, Angus S. King Jr., governor of the state of Maine, do hereby proclaim March 14-21, 1996, as Dr. George D. Snell Week throughout the state of Maine, and urge all citizens to join in honoring this great Honorary Son of Maine and his life's endeavors."
