Mark your calendars for the October 18-20 Homecoming Weekend when Old Eli will be in town! Among the many 59s appearing at the May 1996 Class Officers Weekend activities was immediate past class president John Ferries, now president of the class president's association, who presided at the main dinner event on Friday evening. John did a fabulous job of bringing content orientation to the myriad class officer workshops offered on Saturday and organized buzz sessions for officers to discuss among themselves better ways to carry on class functions. Class president HowardGreene presided at the Saturday luncheon and introduced a panel which included Dartmouth Director of Athletics Dick Jaeger.
Howard reports that Landon Rowland, CEO of the Kansas Gity Southern Transportation System, and Bob "Lefty"Cline, CEO of Airborne Freight, are mentioned in the May 20, 1996, issue of Forbes magazine as being among the nation's top chief executives.
Myron Lewis, M.D., who, along with Scott Palmer, represents '59 on the Alumni Council, writes that his youngest daughter Joelle graduated with the class of 1996. Another physician, JimGroundwater, reports that he and wife Lorna are enjoying their home in the Hillsborough section of the San Francisco Bay area and having fun with their children, Kate 9 and Andy 11.
John Greppin wrote that Al Ziegler, whom he has known since third grade, is a great joker and that Zieg's summary of John's academic achievements reported in the May 1996 column should be taken in that light. John disclaims having translated the Armenian Ornithological Dictionary from ancient Greek into Armenian, as reported. He says that instead, he wrote a book on classical and middle Armenian bird names and identified them according to our phylogenetic system, and that the book is actually useful.
He also does not claim credit for having turned up any of the ancient physician Galen's writings, as reported. Rather, he edited from various manuscript sources a pharmaceutical word list called the GalenDictionary, a sixth century A.D. dictionary of pharmaceutical terms with classical Armenian glosses, all written in Armenian script. In retaliation, John reveals that Zieg, who is in the insurance business in Rochester, N.Y., has concocted a scheme to cut costs by insuring only the right side of things—such as the right side of people's bodies (thus avoiding payment of claims related to heart problems) and the right side of cars (far less frequently occupied, almost universally being the passenger side).
Congratulations, to Rick Francis, a longtime partner in the Pittsburgh law firm of Meyer, Ukovic and Scott, who was elected a member of the firm's management committee. Rick, who is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, is chairman of the firm's litigation section, and concentrates his practice in business and insurance coverage. I hesitate to mention this, Rick, for fear you will be hearing from the aforesaid Ziegler. If you do, I suggest you immediately inform him that you are not admitted in New York.
