A word of thanks to our new leader, Dave Heald, who planned and orchestrated the wonderful June post-reunion at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch, N.H. There were 35 of us who headed north after the Hanover bash. We were met at the door by Dave along with Peggy and Dick Rugen, who unfortunately couldn't make Reunion; they looked great. The hotel had everything—sensational mountain views, super golf and tennis, heated pool, lake for boating, and really unbelievable food. The hotel hosted cocktail parties for '42 on both nights with an open bar and a marvelous spread of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres. Watch for the announcement of the next Balsams event Dave is hatching; you won't want to miss it.
Now for some additional reflections on the Reunion itself. At the class meeting a report prepared by Proc Page, GuySwenson and Ginia Allison was approved unanimously. Their motion calls for the establishment of a class of 1942 scholarship fund. Guy has already assembled the first $10,000 ($1,500 from our treasury) and can now access earlier bequests to add to this. When it reaches $100,000 it will be a named scholarship; until then the principal will be managed by the Trustees and the annual income will provide scholarship assistance to students as determined by the office of financial aid. You can now designate present or future gifts to the College to become part of this 1942 fund. The class also approved $500 to support a 1941 project— a major improvement to the memorial (located between the Inn and Hopkins) honoring our WW II and Korean War casualties.
There was a seminar on aging, organized by John Montagne, with the assistance of Mike deSherbinin, Bud Dutton, DickRiggs, Dave Sills, Bate Ewart, and Huntly and Ginia Allison. Dave moderated the opening session; the medical aspects were discussed by Stuart Finch with Dr. C. Everett Koop '37; "Life in a Retirement Community" was handled by BobEncherman and Buzz Cassidy; "Changes and Challenges in the Lives of Modern Women" was moderated by Yole Sills. Watch for Huntly's letter with plans for the fall mini-reunion scheduled October 3-5, 1997, at Lake Morey Inn (and Hanover, of course). See you then, I hope.
