So far, every submission I've received came via e-mail, but this month I have some more traditional correspondence. Dianne (Menard) Young sent me a genuine handwritten note to say that she and her husband, Nick, live in Springfield, Mass, with their beautiful 14-month-old daughter Melanie. Although Melanie loves their two cats and 130-pound Newfound- land, the cats don't return the affection. Dianne has completed her second master's degree (in mathematics) and is teaching high school math and physics. She stays in touch with Jimand Kelly (Aldrich) Ouellette, who just had their second son in May. Alison (Fontaine)Engel gave birth to her first child, Leigh, in August 1996.
Charlie Wheelan has received the College's "1997 Honorable Mention Award" in recognition of his "Extraordinary Achievements." The certificate cites his travels "'round the girdled earth" as a reporter, political analyst, speech writer, and educational advisor, and his continuing success at bringing honor to Dartmouth. Congratulations, Charlie!
Melise Gramm faxed me from Vail, Colo., where she is creative director and head of advertising for Kidstuff, a sports- related children's magazine. Since graduation she has worked in London as art director for an advertising agency, and moved to Vail two months ago. She now has plenty of time to ski, mountain bike, climb, kayak, fish, and spend time with K2, her malamute, who joins her on the slopes and in the office. She also has room for visiting classmates in her piece of paradise, so if anyone is heading out to Vail be sure to stop by.
Paul Blackburn sent news of multitudes: he and his wife, Kristin Dillon '89 (and their daughter Althea, age 1), just moved from the Bay Area to the Rocky Mountains. Kristin's residency in family practice is beginning in Fort Collins. Before their move, they took a "self-funded" ten-week sabbatical in the Sierras, Mexico, and Western Europe. Althea thinks motor scooters, übiquitous in France and Italy, are the most interesting thing in the world. In Mexico they were hosted by Mike Derzon and his wife, Robin Supplee, who spent the last year in San Miguel de Allende. Mike taught English and campaigned for mayor; Robin staffed a medical clinic as a midwife. Paul Sonn has been appointed to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and works in New York City. Geoff Hyatt paid a West Coast visit to the Blackburns over New Year's. He has returned from a long stint in Europe (Munich and Russia) and continues in Boston with the Boston Consulting Group.
Deron Ash attended Jon Feinstein's wedding this spring. "Quite the posh affair," he reports. A small Dartmouth contingent was present, including Deron, Geoff Wade and wife Meg, Jon's brother Rob '89 (best man), and Adam Rabiner. He also shared a rumor that NeilFriedman is living in Houston as an ophthalmic surgeon.
Ed Gray let us know that he married Kathryn Payne on February 16th in Half Moon Bay, Calif., where they now live. Chris Ludwig writes from Maine, where he and his wife, Jennie, landed after his graduation from the University of Michigan's M.B.A. program this spring. He is anxiously awaiting news of job offers from companies in New Jersey and Boston. Matt Njaa lives in Concord, N.H. After four years as a lawyer, he opted for a change of professions and is now taking premed classes at UNH.
Finally, a sad note. Keith Nelson, of Hartford, Conn., passed away on November 14th, 1995, in Montreal Canada after a 12-day hospitalization. His mother writes that he was a kind, caring, and loving son. There are many who miss him.
