Not much in the way of news this month! I suppose the dearth is not critical, since this edition of the column will be printed roughly about the time of the reunion. Those who want to find out the latest will have a chance to catch up with friends in Hanover.
Bai-Mas Taal now. has the record for the farthest flung e-mail, having sent a note from Nairobi, Kenya, where he serves as a senior environmental affairs office with the United Nations. Bai-Mas is in charge of global forest-related issues for the UN. Bai-Mas reports that he and Derba had another son (Cheick Omar Nuru Taal), and that he has "a new passion golf. Watch out Tiger Woods, here I come!"
Amy Gillenson, who did a great job with this column before I was placed in charge (it's gone downhill ever since), was recently appointed associate director of development at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Amy left the cold winds of Syracuse, N.Y., for the crab cakes of Baltimore a few years ago. Daniel Carragher has been certified as a bankruptcy law specialist by the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification. Don't yawn; when the Dow Jones plunges to 1,200 next year you may be glad to have a name to call.
Mike Chiarella sent a card from New Zealand. Mike, Susan, and young Spike traveled down under once again to wind up affairs on the sheep ranch Mike inherited. Managing a ranch on the other side of the world while practicing law in New London is a little more of a challenge than the Chiarellas expected. If any classmates are interested in buying 12,000 hectares of prime grazing land in the shadow of Mt. Ngaurnhoe, along with a whole bunch of friendly sheep, please contact Mike at 8 Tracy Road, New London, NH 03257, or via e-mail at .
And last but not least, the collective dedication of several rounds of class officers and generosity from classmates has resulted in meeting our class scholarship goal. Starting this fall, there will be a Class of 1976 Scholar at the College. We are told that '76 is the youngest class to have funded a scholarship at the named level the next youngest class with a named scholar is the class of 1960. There will be a discussion of the criteria for award of our scholarship at the Reunion. A round of applause to all who contributed, and special kudos to Melanie Fisher Matte, our class treasurer, who never flagged in her efforts to pull this project through to a successful conclusion!
Well, that's it. I need some more grist for the mill please drop a line, call, or send a note.
