The news is sparse this month the Post Office's dog sleds must be on strike. Remember, any news is good news and is virtually guaran teed space in this column. I did get a copy of Bill Schillhammer's Christmas letter, which shows how fast the mail arrives in Alaska. Bill has relocated to Grantham, N.H., in the wake of a promotion to president and CEO of Direct Imaging. He has obtained a private pilot's license and an instrument rating, no small feat, and is playing "old boys' rugby." Bill's new offices are within striking distance of Dunkin' Donuts in West Lebanon, and he reports that his townhouse in Grantham has "lots of room for visitors."
In the legal world, Maris Veidemanis is now working for the notorious Kaye, Scholer law firm on Park Avenue in N.Y.C. The firm was described to me as "blue-chip but not whiteshoe. " I'm not quite sure what that means, but maybe someone does and will write to explain.
On the other end of the shoe spectrum, Dave Howe is providing legal advice to Caterpillar Co. in Peoria, Ill.a "cow chip and steeltoed-boot" sort of place.
An anonymous fax sent by a former member of Phi Psi reported that Peter Feakins's left arm was seen floating in a tributary of the Amazon some years ago. The rest of Peter is apparently working for Schwinn Bicycles in Chicago. Charlie Potts is working at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. And Dan Sheedy is back in West Conshohoken, Pa., where he has a bookstore and the town's first espresso stand.
Vacation time is approaching and, conveniently, there are a number of our classmates living in France. Shawn Altier is in Paris, with spouse Dominique. Judging by their address, the Altiers live in a raucous part of town close to a great jazz club (the New Morning) and to some good restaurants. Corey Bock is also in Paris, in a slightly more dignified neighborhood, near the Picasso museum. The peripatetic Nancy Kepes J eton and Peter Jeton are the most comfortably lodged, in the posh 16th Arondissement. Buffy Boognusch is practicing medicine at clinics in Chamonix and Grenoble, close to skiing and hiking opportunities. And finally, Betsy Tobin has relocated from Monmartre to the picturesque (and for Canadians, historically significant) seaside town of Dieppe.
