As I write (in March), Deng Xiaoping has died. As you read (in June), Den Xiaoping is still dead. If I never hear from any of you, I will no doubt have news to report on the developments with the powers that be in Beijing. Interesting for some, but given that China is by no means my personal area of expertise, I strongly urge you to provide me with another angle on this column. Since few of you have cooperated in passing along newsworthy tidbits, here's the little I've got:
January brought a mild winter to the Northeast and a stork visit to Linda Cooper Marshall. Joining 20-month-old Jenkins Jr. is Henry Linton Marshall. A reuse of clothing from big brother is in store for Henry and perhaps another stork visit for the pink version in the future for the Marshall clan?? Mark Stern, wife Betsy, and son Carson welcomed William "Will" Lee Burnham Stern on January 23, weighing in at a whopping nine pounds, eight ounces! Preparing for expansion is Lucy Harvey LoRe, having moved with hubby, Alan, and 2-year-old daughter Molly out of D.C. to a "suburban chateau" in Chevy Chase in anticipation of the arrival of baby #2. At the time of this publication, baby LoRe has probably arrived and we wish all of the above well with their expanding families.
The one response to my pleas for news arrived just in time for print from Eva Lindholm Ispahani. Still residing in London with husband Iraj, Eva expounds on her current state of affairs: 'I spent, quite literally, all of last year executing the Russian debut bond, which meant steering it through two rounds of presidential elections, Yeltsin's heart surgery, spending half my life in Moscow.... It was all great fun but utterly exhausting. So Iraj and I spent two weeks in Mexico in December at a resort that had no TV, no radio, nothing to do but swim and sleep and drink margaritas. I even tried to get a tan, but some things are just not physically possible. Tanning is where I reach my limit!" Well, that's just about the only limit Eva has given, and she no doubt conducted all of the above in native tongues, the many of which she continues to expand upon with her linguistic savoir faire!
Just to prove the level of "scrounging" I'm undertaking to get news, how about a joke? Like the ones passed onto me from Shelley Levitt Nadel. Seems second time around at motherhood is affording Shelley a bit of free time at least enough time to surf the 'Net and pass along jokes such as this: How many Harvard students does it take to change a lightbulb? One; he holds the bulb and the world revolves around him.
Last tidbit I spotted a bearded and mustached Tony Kingsley last October shaking a leg at a wedding in Southampton (Long Island). Seems Tony and I are mutual buddies of the groom, Bob Dennis my husband went to business school with him and Tony works at McKinsey with him. Small world, but we always knew that! I should say Tony "worked" with Bob given that Bob has since departed McKinsey to pursue other interests. But I know that's of little interest to you all since Bob wasn't even a classmate, but hey, I'm desperate for NEWS!
The future of column news rests with you I trust there will be a groundswell of news far more noteworthy to our class than developing events in China, curious as they may be.
