On Thursday, January 16, 1975 the New York Rotary Club awarded San Treat a Gold Badge signifying that he has been a member of the Club for 50 years. In Sandy's case the record is 53 plus. He joined the New York Club in 1921. Ken Huntington was one of the many hundred admirers who attended this historic ceremony. Harry Colwell also joined Rotary in 1921. If he had lived a few more weeks he would have attended the lunch honoring Sandy.
Immediately following the Gold Badge award Sandy was presented the Rotary Club's Certificate of Merit in recognition of his many contributions spanning almost 54 years of service to Rotary. Sanford M. Treat Jr. '46 attended the luncheon where his father was eulogized and honored.
Marshall Chadwell sent me a clipping from the Boston Globe dated 1/15/75. It is a ski picture of Jack McCrillis and Sherman Adams '20 on the slopes of Loon Mountain, N.H. In a Smoke Signal dated 12/2/66 I provided the class with a comprehensive account of Jack's many talents and activities. Space limitations prevent me from repeating most of this information in these notes. Jack recently reviewed this report and gave me this succinct response "Not much change. Brampton Woolen Company has gone out of business. I've acquired a new pair of skis, and have done more skiing and had more fun on them than any year since we got out of college." A few highlights of my 12/2/66 report state that Jack is a 32nd degree Mason, the fourth generation in one lodge. His son John Cooper McCrillis, Dartmouth '52 is the fifth generation in the same lodge. He joined Rotary over 40 years ago (it may be 50 by now). He was treasurer for many years of the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club. He is a director of the New Hampshire Insurance Company. John married Hester Cooper in October 1924. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October with a family party of 12 including six grandchildren. John was appointed bequest chairman of our Class in 1972.
During the winter several travelling classmates sent me cheerful messages from Florida. At the head of the list were Spike andDick Dudensing and Budd and Leonora Welsh.Ken Huntington supplied me with an eye witness account of the Rotary Club lunch in New York honoring San Treat on January 16. Jim Davis cogently advises me that "I've been too busy to see anyone this year." Probably he is still dreaming about his hole-in-one golf shot when all of us were young men.
Someone sent me a long clipping from the Muscatine lowa Journal dated October 10, 1974 featuring the activities of S. G. Stein III. He is the third in direct line with the name in Muscatine. His grandfather moved there in 1849. From that time on the Stein name has figured prominently in the business circles of Muscatine. Si is a member of all Masonic bodies including Scottish Rite 33rd degree. He is also a member of Rotary International, The Elks Lodge, and served many years as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Muscatine. He is a member of the Union League Club, Chicago; Capitol Hill Club, Washington, D.C.; Boca Raton Hotel and Club, Boca Raton, Fla.; Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, Boca Raton; and St. Geneva Golf & Country Club, Muscatine.
