1919

While in the South this past winter, we went over to Sun City Center and called on Mary and Jim Davis. They are well and send their regards to all members of the Class. Jim plays golf frequently and says he is doing well. Before lunch we had cocktails at Jim's home, and he invited Henry Lowell '14 and his wife and also Lucille Towler ('17). Later we stopped and saw Lucille's charming home.

I ran into Hub Harwood '26, who had seen Adelaide Clements a few days previously. Adelaide now lives at 101 Whispering Sands Drive, Sarasota, and would appreciate hearing news from her friends in the Class of 1919.

At Pinehurst I saw a good bit of Mary andDoc Hodgkins. They gave us a cocktail party at which they turned out an impressive group including the only Republican governor since the Civil War. Mary has recovered well from a series of operations. I played golf several times with Doc at the Country Club of North Carolina. Their three sons are widely scattered. Norris Jr. is executive manager of the Union National Bank at Southern Pines, George is an officer and part owner of Computer Mailings, Inc., in Los Angeles and the Reverend Lewis is at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Pomeroy, Washington.

One of my scouts reports that Nock Wallis and Henry Clay and his daughter attended the annual Dartmouth alumni association of eastern Massachusetts dinner.

We enjoyed the accounts in Red Smith's column and last month's MAGAZINE of the celebration of the 80th birthday of Earl Blaik, who is an honorary member of 1919 and who has always maintained his interest in the Class and the College. It was a surprise party in Palm Springs, Cal., where Earl spends his winters. Among the 131 guests were Dave Camerer '37, a weekend golfer named Bob Hope, and a former Michigan center named Gerald Ford with his wife, Betty. They came from all over to honor Earl, and 1919 members echo the fine things that were said about Earl.
