The last we heard about Derek Pew was from a classmate; this month we hear from him directly. He is now president of The Furst Group, a private telecommunications company. He used to work at Morgan, Lewis, and Bockius in Philadelphia with Victor Limongelli and Victor's brother.
Derek lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Wendy, and two daughters Alexandra (2 1/2) and Katherine (6 months). Derek keeps in close contact with R.A. McDonough, his roommate from Beta, who is an investment banker with the Beacon Group in New York and is married, living outside New York with his wife, Gerta, and daughter Eliza (2).
Derek McDowell (another Beta) just became senior vice president and a principal of Trivest, a venture capital company in Miami where he lives with his wife, Julianne, son Alexander (2 1/2), and daughter Claire (8 months). Harry Schimkat (yet another Beta) is an attorney who lives and works in New York with his wife, Renee. And finally, Derek mentions John Wilcox, who manages a portfolio fund and lives in NYC with his wife, Virginia.
Kendra (Lehnertz) Morgenstern wrote to say that her wedding planning is over, married life has begun, and she now has a new name (which is the only big adjustment although everyone keeps calling her Rhoda). She lives in Japan and is amazed by the change from Japan's bubble days. Japan is almost affordable at 140 yen to the dollar.
Doug Brockway sent some quick updates on life in Baltimore. The big news is that he and his wife, Lisa, just had a baby boy (their first child)! Conor David Brockway was born on June 16 at 11:18 p.m. The Brockways recently bought a home in Ellicott City, Md., which is almost midway between Baltimore and D.C. "Four-bedroom colonial with a decent sized lot we're quickly adjusting to life in the 'burbs. We now have the house, the kid, and the dog I guess we just need the white picket fence to complete the picture."
Doug is a vice president at BT Alex. Brown, in the firm's consumer/business services group in investment banking. "There is a ton of business," writes Doug. "If any of our entrepreneurial classmates have built companies that might fall into one of these camps and need some advice on raising capital or selling, feel free to email me or call me."
Doug reports that other classmates have also recently had kids Colin Stewart just had a little girl, his first; John Rep]ogle had another little girl, his second; and Bob Yee recently had a little boy, his second child.
Peter Vorbrich sent us the condensed version of the past ten years. His wife, Mary Sue, was a classmate at the University of Michigan Law School. After law school they moved to Minneapolis and have been there ever since. Sometime between then and now Peter earned an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. After two- plus years in private practice Peter took an in-house job with Cargill and then switched to the "business side" a little over a year ago. He is an investment manager with a focus on real estate-related investments, particularly distressed opportunities. Peter and Mary Sue are relocating to Tokyo, Japan, for at least three years, where Peter hopes to pursue a similar investment strategy. Mary Sue will be leaving her partnership in a law firm specializing in construction litigation when they move.
