Chris Schons sent in a photo of himself with Florida Gov.Jeb Bush along with Ambassador Rene de Leon and Foreign Minister Maria Eugenia Brizuela de Avila of El Salvador in February 2001. As international affairs coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean for the Florida Department of State, Chris frequently finds himself involved in these meetings. The topic of discussion on the day in question: international disaster relief for El Salvador after its recent earthquakes. I've forwarded the photo to Ed Gray in hopes that his newsletter can print it for all to see.

Jennifer Avellino, '89 class secretary, forwarded me an update from Victor Limongelli. Victor and his wife Karen had a son named Jack on January 20, just six days before the birth of Jennifer's daughter. "Maybe they'll meet at a reunion or in the class of' 23!" wrote Victor.

Hilary Justice received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago in June and will start a new position as a professor of English and literary publishing at Illinois State University this fall. Her academic focus is on modernism and publishing.

Derek McDowell reports that "all is well in here in Miami." He and his wife Juli Anne are happy to announce that they recently welcomed their third child, Margaret Anna McDowell, in April. Both mother and daughter are doing well. They have also been glad to see a couple of '88s joining them in Miami. Harry Schimkat and his wife, Rene, have moved to Miami, where Harry has joined the SEC. Derek is a managing director of Trivest Inc., a leading provider of equity for middle -market corporate acquisitions, recapitalizations and growth-capital financings.

One warm afternoon as spring finally reached us in northern Massachusetts, I was walking my 3- and 1-year-old boys down the sidewalk in front of our house when Todd Jackson rode by on his bicycle, his daughter Julia and son Scott in tow in a children's trailer. Todd was getting his last outdoor exercise before his wife, Caroline, gave birth to their third child. I asked Todd for an update: "On May 31, our third child, Emily, was born, joining Julia (4) and Scott (2). Caroline and I are making the transition to a 'zone defense' with the help of local grandparents. We recently enjoyed seeing Renee Noto, Sean Hogan and wife Jana, and Scott and Barb (Turley) Marr at John Jenkins's 35th birthday party. Needless to say, Bridget (Marley) Jenkins was able to keep the surprise and put on quite a show. I also ran into Mike Freidberg while towing my two older kids on my bike—it turns out our kids are in the same preschool!"

Finally, I'm sorry to report that Maia Hansen died recently of uterine sarcoma. In the two years following her diagnosis, Maia married Clark Youmans, traveled the world, edited two novels and various travel guides and still managed to sing in a choir, play soccer, lead yoga classes and live life to its fullest. As one friend wrote, "Maia was like sunshine." Maia's good friend Jeni Anderson wrote an obituary, which appears in this issue of the Alumni Magazine.
