The Dartmouth water polo team made a big splash in November by defeating the University of Colorado 11-8 to win the National Water Polo Club Championship. The victory came on the heels of a 13-3 victory over host Williams, the only club to which Dartmouth lost during the regular season. Dartmouth entered the championship ranked eighth, and finished as the top team in the country.
Since the arrival of Coach Jim Wilson in 1994, the team has advanced to the national championships three times and has conisistently placed among the top clubs in the nation. A club sport, the team's membership is open to anyone associated with the College. Wilson admits that he's not a great polo coach, but that he requires more practice time from the men than other coaches might. The team currently has eight to nine workouts per week.
"They were like a team of horses running free," Wilson said after the championship. "The talent's always been there, but they just needed someone to make it gel and to make sure that they show up to practice on time."
